With its armored vehicles running low and Ukrainian drones dominating the skies, the Russian army is being forced to resort to using motorcycles in assault operations. It’s a desperate move that could turn into a sensible strategy, Business Insider reports .
The author of the publication admits that motorcycles were used in all the great wars of the machine era, but as a means of transportation in the rear and in the frontline zone. The Russians are probably the first to replace tanks and infantry fighting vehicles with motorcycles in combat.
“Russia’s increased use of motorcycles is an adaptation in response to widespread Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian armor and the disproportionate armor losses that Russian forces suffered in late 2023 and 2024,” according to a new report from the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War.
It should be acknowledged that the motorcycle has its obvious strengths – it is a fairly fast and maneuverable vehicle that can overcome a dangerous zone in a short time, avoiding drone strikes. And that is why the Russians seem to be betting on motorcycle assault squads now. At the same time, the use of motorcycles occurs to a certain extent consciously.
“Russian motorcyclists are now attacking in columns of eight motorcycles with the support of electronic warfare (EW) systems. Russian servicemen are carrying EW systems in the front, center and at the end of the columns to protect the motorcycles from attacks by Ukrainian drones,” said a Ukrainian soldier who is fighting in the Pokrovsk direction.
Russia uses motorcyclists in two scenarios – either as a “hit and run” method or as a way to quickly break through a fortified defense.
The Institute for the Study of War notes that the use of motorcycles was not an idea of the Russian high command, but a desperate improvisation on the front lines in the face of high losses from Ukrainian drones. The use of drones in the Russian army began in the same way.
The Russian Defense Ministry is currently trying to formally organize frontline operations using motorcycles. In particular, it is proposed to create motorcycle training centers, as well as integrate motorcycle units into regular military formations. This means that the motorcycle assault concept can be extended to all Russian brigades in Ukraine and, possibly, become part of Russian tactics in future wars.
However, the centralized motorization of the Russian army also carries certain risks, analysts say. In particular, it may reduce the ability of the Russian army to adapt to the new realities of the front, analysts note.
Motorcycles have begun to be used for this, and in large numbers. Dozens of motorcyclists can be involved in one attack . In most cases, such attacks end in nothing but huge losses.
