Russia possesses one of, if not the most extensive collections of air defense systems globally, along with a seemingly limitless supply of missiles to sustain them. For example, they introduced newer SAMs like the S-300 in the 70s, ultra-fast systems like the Tor in the 80s for countering low-flying cruise missiles, and, more recently, they have focused on systems like the S-400 and highly capable radars to detect stealth aircraft. Despite Russia’s extensive world-class air defense systems, questions arise about why we see frequent reports of Ukrainian drones striking targets in Moscow and Crimea. Are Ukraine’s military drones a dangerous threat? Is Russian air defense truly exceptional, or does it fall short of its reputation when put to the test in actual combat scenarios? Or is there another reality that lies in between?
