Poland has invoked NATO’s Article 4 after multiple Russian drones violated Polish airspace Wednesday. The article calls for members to consult as a unit when the security of a membered nation is threatened.
Russia has brushed off the incident, saying it intended to carry out an attack on military facilities in western Ukraine and had no plans to hit any targets in Poland, adding that they are “prepared to hold consultations with the Polish defence ministry on this topic.”
Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz commended NATO for demonstrating unity after their military shot down the invading drones, noting the organization “passed the test” and “did not succumb to Russian pressure.”
President Karol Nawrocki suggested Moscow’s intent was to test the nation’s “readiness to respond,” while Prime Minister Donald Tusk said there’s no reason to claim that Poland is in a state of war – despite international fears.
Poland immobilizing Moscow’s drones Wednesday marked the first time a NATO member fired shots since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
