Plastic Welding Basics – Repairing Damaged Kayak – Cracked Hull Repair – Landing Gear Mistake
Chalk this one up to a learning experience. There’s a reason Old Town does NOT recommend installing landing gear on their canoes and kayaks…and I learned that lesson the hard way when I developed a crack in the hull of my Sportsman 120 PDL.
On this episode, I ordered a plastic welding kit from amazon and taught myself how to weld the damaged area and broken plastic with a welding gun, staples, and a little patience…

Good job my friend. Wanting to get landing gear myself, still researching on how to brace it. I got the pdl106.
Not a bad weld, you can ask Old Town and they'll send you plastic to match your kayak. You demonstrated why I won't be putting the landing gear on my 120 though. Just too much weight for something like that. Maybe they will add foam reinforcements down that back seam in the future and some tracks.

I like that kit. I used a flat point soldering iron with regular staples and melted zip ties to fix a plastic nose cone for the rub rail on my boat. It was a small job and worked well but with what you had to fix the kit looked to do the job! With the freezing temps on the lake the last few days, this was a good fill in vid!

You need a backing plate for the landing gear or it will do it again.
