Paint Peeling / High-Speed Tape Drone Inspection of a Boeing 787 wing

The Boeing 787’s and A350’s of this world suffer from paint issues on the top side of the wings. The outer paint layers on the wings seem to deteriorate and occasionally peel off. The current practice is that spots that show deterioration are covered with speed tape. The tape is a temporary means to protect the composite structure from further UV damage. Every A-check a manual, visual inspection is conducted. This takes about 3-4 hours.

Using an automated drone to visually inspect the aircraft is more time-and cost efficient. It can be achieved in about 20 minutes (10 minutes per wing). The drone can be deployed in a matter of minutes, taking high-resolution images. These images support ground engineers to get an estimation on the size of the paint issues as well as the severity of deterioration across successive inspections.
