At least five people were killed in a new wave of violence in Jiribam district, Manipur, following rocket attacks by militants in Bishnupur on Saturday. The previous day’s rocket assaults had already resulted in the death of an elderly man and injuries to five others. According to a security officer, the death toll is expected to rise, as militants engaged in a gunfight early Saturday morning after entering a village and killing a resident. The violence is part of ongoing ethnic clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities.
The conflict in Manipur has been intense for the past 17 months, with recent events exacerbating tensions in the state. On Friday, militants escalated their attacks by using rockets for the first time since the conflict began. Manipur police reported that Kuki militants deployed “long-range rockets,” roughly four feet long and made from galvanized iron pipes, which were fired from elevated positions.
