Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso Withdraw Envoys From Algiers Over Drone Shooting | Firstpost Africa | N18G
Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso have withdrawn their ambassadors from Algiers, accusing Algerian forces of shooting down a Malian drone. The three military-led allies announced the move in a joint statement, calling it a violation of their sovereignty. Last month, Mali accused Algeria of shooting down a surveillance drone over its northern region. Algeria confirmed it had taken down a drone but did not provide further details, stating only that the drone had entered its airspace. According to Algerian officials, the drone was destroyed near the town of Tin Zaouatine, close to Mali’s northern border. Mali’s northern region is a stronghold of Tuareg separatist rebels who have been fighting the country’s military government. Mali has denied Algeria’s claims, insisting the drone was operating within its own territory. Bamako went further, accusing Algiers of “sponsoring international terrorism.”
