Rolling through Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, before a rostrum on which pride of place will be given to President Xi, President Putin of Russia and Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s supreme leader, will be a new generation of tanks, fighter aircraft and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The United States will be paying particular attention to China’s array of hypersonic missiles, which military experts now believe to be the finest set in the world. Pete Hegseth, the US defence secretary, said shortly before he took office that he feared they could wipe out all America’s aircraft carriers in the first 20 minutes of a war.
Much of the new weaponry the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is planning to put on prominent public display for the first time will be deliberately exposed to the world — an open message that China’s “renewal” as a superpower, as Xi puts it, is almost complete.
Xi gave orders on assuming power that the PLA, which he found to be corrupt and incompetent, should get ready to take on America and, if ordered to do so, be fit to take Taiwan by force by 2027, when the PLA will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
