Drone crashed bho😭😱bird attacked on my dji drone | How We Lost It in the Fields & Drone Search #vlog

Today, something unexpected happened! While my brother, who is a passionate moto vlogger, was flying his DJI Mini 2 SE drone from his house, a bird attacked it mid-air! This caused a motor failure, and the drone crashed into a nearby agricultural field. We immediately realized that we had lost control of the drone. While bird attacks on drones are uncommon, they do happen, and today was a firsthand experience of just how chaotic things can get when nature interferes with technology.

In this video, I share the entire journey of how we tried to locate the downed drone using my DJI Mini 4 Pro. From the moment the bird hit the drone, to the frantic search across a large field, we went all out trying to recover it!

The Incident:
My brother, being a moto vlogger, often uses drones to capture beautiful aerial shots of his bike rides, roads, and outdoor sceneries. Today was no different, except for the unexpected twist that was about to unfold. As he was flying his DJI Mini 2 SE for some footage from his house, we suddenly noticed a bird approaching rapidly towards the drone. Despite trying to maneuver the drone to safety, the bird collided with it, causing the motor to fail, and the drone plummeted into an agricultural field nearby.

Why do Birds Attack Drones?
Birds, especially territorial ones, often view drones as threats. The buzzing noise, size, and movement of a drone might mimic a predator or intruder, prompting the bird to attack in defense of its territory. This is particularly common with large birds like hawks or eagles, though even smaller birds may see drones as competition.

Unfortunately, in our case, the bird strike caused one of the motors to fail, and the DJI Mini 2 SE couldn’t maintain its flight, leading to the crash.

Our Drone Search Mission:
As soon as the drone crashed, we grabbed my DJI Mini 4 Pro to conduct an aerial search from above. Given the expansive size of the field, we knew it would be difficult to locate the exact spot. With no GPS tracking or “find my drone” feature available on the crashed drone, it was up to my DJI Mini 4 Pro to assist in the search.

We began by flying over the last known location of the drone crash and started scanning the area. The Mini 4 Pro’s advanced camera system and longer flight time were a huge advantage in this situation. I used its high-resolution footage to try and spot any clues.
Challenges in Drone Recovery:
Recovering a crashed drone isn’t always easy. We encountered several difficulties during our search:

The large size of the agricultural field: With vast areas to cover, finding a small object like a drone is akin to searching for a needle in a haystack.
Obstacles in the field: Dense crops and uneven terrain made it difficult for even the DJI Mini 4 Pro to spot anything from the air.
Limited daylight: As the day progressed, sunlight began to fade, making it even harder to see anything clearly, especially from the air.
How to Avoid Bird Attacks on Drones: While it’s not entirely possible to prevent bird attacks, there are a few things drone pilots can do to reduce the risk:

Fly at lower altitudes: Birds typically fly at higher altitudes, so staying lower can help you avoid bird encounters.
Be mindful of bird habitats: If you know you’re flying near areas where birds nest or congregate, try to avoid flying too close.

The Aftermath:
Sadly, despite our best efforts, we weren’t able to locate the DJI Mini 2 SE by the end of the day. Losing a drone can be a disheartening experience, especially one as reliable as the Mini 2 SE. It’s a reminder of just how unpredictable things can get when flying drones, especially in outdoor environments with wildlife.

Lessons Learned:
Invest in drone tracking technology: Whether it’s through GPS or built-in tracking software, having the ability to locate your drone after a crash is invaluable.
Fly in open areas: Try to avoid flying near dense fields or forests, as recovering a downed drone becomes significantly harder in these environments.
Be mindful of wildlife: While drones are fun to fly, we should always be respectful of the natural habitats of animals.
Why This Video Is Important:
If you’re a drone pilot, always be prepared for the unexpected! Whether it’s bird attacks, strong winds, or technical malfunctions, it’s essential to stay calm, troubleshoot, and take action accordingly. And, of course, it helps to have a backup drone like the DJI Mini 4 Pro to assist in rescue missions!
